Legal
Terms & Conditions
The basis on which we offer this site, its guides, its listings, and its accounts — and the limits of what we can promise.
Last updated: July 2026
1. About these terms
These terms govern your use of whatisarbaeen.org ("the site"), operated by What Is Arbaeen ("we", "us"). By using the site you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
They should be read together with our Privacy Policy.
2. What this site is — and is not
We are a non-profit educational initiative. Everything here is offered free of charge: the guides, the mawakib index, the live stream, the registration system, and member accounts.
We are not a travel agency, tour operator, government body, or official representative of any shrine, authority, or moukib. We do not sell travel, arrange visas, or take bookings.
3. Accuracy, and the limits of our information
We work hard to keep our content correct and to cite our sources, but the pilgrimage changes every year. In particular:
- Dates follow the lunar calendar and may shift with moon sighting. Any date on this site is an expectation, not a certainty.
- Camp listings change between seasons. Camps move, close, or alter their services. Treat the index as a guide, never a guarantee.
- Travel, visa, health and safety guidance can change at any moment. Always confirm with official authorities, your travel provider, and trusted local organisers before you travel or make decisions.
- Religious content is presented for education. Where narrations are summarised or abridged, consult the original sources and qualified scholars for rulings.
You use the information on this site at your own discretion and risk.
4. Registration and accounts
- Registering does not create an account. An account is created only after our team reviews and approves your registration.
- You must give accurate information, and you must be authorised to register the moukib you submit. Registering a camp you do not represent is a breach of these terms.
- You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for activity under your account. Tell us immediately if you suspect misuse.
- Accounts are personal to the organisation or individual they were issued to and must not be shared or transferred.
- We may refuse, suspend, edit, or remove any registration, listing, or account — at our discretion — particularly where information appears false, misleading, or harmful.
5. Moukib listings
- Listing is free, and always will be. We never charge mawakib to appear, or to rank higher.
- Approval means we made reasonable checks. It is not an endorsement, certification, or guarantee of the services, safety, or conduct of any camp.
- We publish only your moukib's name, route, pole, services, and any public link you gave us. Contact details stay private.
- You may ask us to remove your listing at any time, for any reason, and we will do so without question.
- By submitting a listing you give us permission to display that information on this site and in our forthcoming app, and to include it in anonymous aggregate figures about the route.
6. Your content and records
The journey records, service figures, notes, photographs, and messages you submit remain yours. By submitting them you grant us a non-exclusive licence to store and display them for the purposes described on the relevant page — for listings, publicly; for personal records, privately to you.
You must not submit anything unlawful, dishonest, hateful, sectarian, defamatory, or that infringes someone else's rights, and you must not upload other people's personal details without their agreement.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Impersonate another person, moukib, organisation, or authority.
- Scrape, bulk-copy, or resell our camp index or member data.
- Use contact information obtained through us to send unsolicited messages.
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any account, server, or part of the site.
- Interfere with the site's operation, or use it to distribute malware or spam.
- Use the site or its branding for political campaigning or commercial promotion without our written permission.
8. Donations
- Donations are treated as general charitable giving (sadaqah) toward the purposes described on our Donate page: spreading the message, our service stall, pilgrim ID cards, and the Mawakib App.
- We do not accept or administer khums, and nothing on this site should be taken as a religious ruling about your obligations. Consult your marja's office.
- Payments are processed by an external provider; their terms apply to the transaction itself. We never see or store your card details.
- Donations are generally non-refundable. If you gave in error, contact us promptly and we will do our best to help.
- We may apply funds across the stated purposes as needs shift, and we publish summaries of what we received and how it was spent.
9. The live stream and third-party material
The live broadcast on our Live page is provided by a third party (Karbala TV). We do not own, control, record, or guarantee it, and it may be unavailable at any time. Links to other websites are provided for convenience only; we are not responsible for their content or practices.
10. Our content
The text, design, code, and original graphics of this site belong to us or our licensors. You are welcome to read, print, and share our guides for personal, educational, and community use, with credit. Republishing substantial parts commercially, or presenting our work as your own, requires our written permission.
Photographs are used under their own licences, and Arabic religious texts are quoted from classical sources with attribution.
11. Availability
We offer this site as a volunteer-run service and cannot promise uninterrupted availability. We may change, suspend, or withdraw any feature at any time, including during the busiest days of the season.
12. Liability
The site and its content are provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss, injury, cost, or damage arising from your use of the site or reliance on its information — including decisions about travel, routes, camps, health, or safety.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
The pilgrimage involves genuine physical risk: heat, long distances, dense crowds, and traffic. Your safety, and that of those travelling with you, is your own responsibility. Follow the instructions of local authorities and shrine staff at all times.
13. Changes, law, and contact
We may update these terms; the current version always appears on this page with its date. Continued use after a change means you accept it.
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction — without affecting any rights you have under the consumer law of your own country.
Questions about these terms: contact us or email info@whatisarbaeen.org.
