People are sometimes surprised to learn that you do not have to be Muslim to be welcome at Arbaeen — as a curious visitor, a walker, or simply someone who wants to understand.
An open road
The hospitality of the mawakib is famously offered to everyone. Journalists, aid workers and travellers of many faiths have walked the route and written about being received not with suspicion but with open arms. The road tends to judge you by one thing: whether you come with respect.

A note on respect
Arbaeen is, for millions, a time of deep mourning and devotion. To take part respectfully is simple: dress modestly, be gentle, ask before photographing people, and receive the hospitality with gratitude. Come with an open heart, and you will find one waiting for you.
